Dedicated (bare-metal) servers are offered by Hetzner and Vultr. When a connection supports them, a Dedicated segment appears on the Compute tab alongside Cloud.
Ordering
Ordering is real money and hard to reverse, so it needs a read/write connection and an itemized confirmation.
- Choose Standard catalog or Auction. An auction is a purchase that can't be cancelled, and its inventory is transient — an offer can vanish before you order.
- Pick an offer, a location (standard offers; auctions are fixed to their datacenter), and optionally an OS and Robot SSH keys.
- Validate (test order) does a dry run where the provider supports it (Hetzner does; Vultr doesn't).
- Place order… shows a confirmation listing Product, Location, OS, Monthly and Setup cost. For an auction you type
ORDERto confirm. Placing it creates a recurring monthly charge.
After ordering, provisioning can take a while. The server appears in the Dedicated list when it's ready — you can leave the progress screen safely.
Managing
Open a dedicated server for its status, plus (on a read/write connection):
- Reboot — Software reboot, Hardware reset, or Manual (power cycle). On Vultr all three do the same single reboot.
- Rescue mode — Enable/Disable. Enabling shows a one-time root password. Rescue mode is Hetzner-only; it doesn't appear on Vultr.
Robot SSH keys (Hetzner)
Dedicated servers use Robot SSH keys, which are separate from your Cloud SSH keys — add them in Hetzner Robot. Without a key, the provider sets a root password.
